Developed by code:jp and published by Sekai Project, Japanese School Life is a visual novel with a slightly not-so-intriguing feature: This VN has a mini-wiki of the Japanese Culture. There are highlighted words that appear on the dialogue box which you can click to learn more about the term. Japanese School Life also features animated characters. Instead of being presented with a static image of a character like most visual novels do, the characters are given an animation to open and close their mouths as they speak and the heads and bodies and move. There are a dialogue choices available and whatever dialogue you chose will either lean towards Chiyoko or Arisa, the two heroines. One bug I encountered is when deleting a save file. Doing so crashes the game so make sure you’ve saved up before attempting to delete a save file.
The best part of the game is the ability to turn on animal ears on!!!
You are Brian, an exchange student to Japan. You became close to two girls named Chiyoko and Arisa on your first day at school. You get to hang out with them, study with them, go to Akihabara with them, et cetera.
You might expect that Japanese School Life is a romance/slice-of-life VN set in school most of the time. Sadly, this VN is mostly about Japanese culture and customs with of slice-of-life as a side dish. There is a hint of romance but if you’re a fan of romance titles, this VN is NOT for you. There is no romance in the way most people would expect it. You may be given dialogue choices but it only changes the dialogue and it slightly affects the ending. You might as well consider this as a kinetic novel. However, if you’re interested in Japanese culture, give this one a shot. This VN is short and can be completed in about 5 hours. A demo is available for this title.
The lack of plot makes Japanese School Life slightly disappointing. If you like romance titles, this VN is not for you. Nevertheless, it is a great VN for those interested in Japanese culture.
